COURSE SUMMARY: In this class we will keep improving our communication skills in all areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Our objective is to grow in proficiency according to the guidelines provided by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). In addition, part of our goals will include understanding and appreciating some of the various cultures that are associated with the Spanish language. Class will be held in Spanish for approximately 90% of the time.
NEEDS FOR THIS CLASS: 1) one 1-inch, 3-ring binder or a section of a bigger binder, 2) lined paper, and 3) a pen or pencil
We will be using the book Vistas in class, which is the book used by Utah Valley University. Students will be using the book in class and will not take it home.
GRADES: Your grade will be based on the following:
a. Achievement of learning targets = 75% (These are labeled “assessments” in Skyward.)
There will be 6-10 learning targets each term and you will have multiple attempts to master these targets. The highest score of your target attempts will count toward your grade, not the lower scores. The purpose is to master the objective. Most of our class time will be used in preparing to reach these targets.
b. 21st Century Skills = 15% (These are included in your grade because future employers and associates will value these skills and traits as you interact with them.)
1. Participation (5%) (This is labeled “participation” in Skyward.)
This skill includes doing speaking activities with your class partner and groups, and commenting on what others say in class using “expressions and rejoinders.” Of course, you will also be expected to speak Spanish in class! Almost daily, you will report to me how well you did on this objective. Below is the chart you will use to report your score.
4—90-100% Spanish spoken in class, including using expressions and rejoinders.
3—75-89% Spanish spoken in class, including using expressions and rejoinders.
2—50-74% Spanish spoken in class, including using expressions and rejoinders.
1—25-49% Spanish spoken in class, including using expressions and rejoinders.
0—0-24% Spanish spoken in class, including using expressions and rejoinders.
2. Responsibility (including turning in quality homework) (5%) (This will be labeled “homework” in Skyward.) Each homework and classroom assignment will be worth 4 points.
3. Integrity, respect, & collaboration (5%) (This will be labeled “other” in Skyward.) This skill includes respecting yourself and others as important individuals and respecting the belongings of others and school property. In addition, collaborating with team members on group projects is essential and you will get a grade based on a rubric for those projects. Respecting classroom rules, including cell phone use, is an additional vital element. Honesty in classwork, homework, and other areas is also key. The teacher will keep notes during the term on each student. Twice a term, midterm and the end of the term, you will be given a grade in this category based on a rubric.
c. Process Skills/Formal Formative Assessments (including quizzes) = 10%
There will be several quizzes/assessments given on listening, grammar, vocabulary, and reading during each term. They will receive a grade based on a 4-point rubric. These can also be retaken, but they will be a different version.
Grading scale:
Grading will not be based on percentages as is traditionally done. The will be based on a 4-point scale, but can be “translated” into percentages.
A = 4/4 100% (91-100) 86-90% = A- 79-85% = B+
B = 3/4 75% (75-80) 70-74% = B- 63-69% = C+
C = 2/4 50% (53-60) 50-52% = C- 43-49% = D+
D = 1/4 25% (36-42) 25-35% = D-
F = 0/4 0-24% (Not enough data to base the grade on)
PESOS: Sra. Collier will give out pesos during the term to students who are expending great effort in speaking Spanish in the class and as awards in competitions or other areas. At the end of the term, these pesos can be used as extra points in participation or for purchasing class prizes during the end-of-term class auctions.
CHEATING: I have a zero-tolerance policy for cheating. If you are caught cheating on anything, you will receive a zero—no exceptions. Your score in the “integrity” category will also go down based on the rubric.
CELL PHONES: Each day students will have the opportunity to put their cell phones in the cell phone docking station and receive a peso for doing so. They will also be “entered” to participate in the end of class “drawing” for two extra pesos. If you need to use your cell phone to contact someone, please ask me for permission and I will most likely say yes. If a student chooses not to put their device in the cell phone keeper and uses it when not appropriate, I will take it and keep it until 2:45 pm.
ATTENDANCE: Attendance is required. Punctuality is required. We follow the American Fork High School attendance policy.
LATE WORK/MAKE-UP WORK: See the responsibility rubric to see how late work affects your grade. If you are absent, please turn in the homework the day you get back. Also, if you are gone for a quiz with an unexcused absence, you will receive a zero.
